The good news is the lesson itself is the easy bit. Our pools are heated and indoors, so the moment your child is in the water they are warm and getting on with it happily. What tends to wear families down is everything either side, the getting there and the getting home. The nice thing is that part is easy to smooth out, and a few small things can take the edge off the whole evening.
What to pack for swimming lessons in winter
Packing the bag the night before is one of those small things that saves a surprising amount of stress. It means you are not hunting for goggles while a cold, impatient child waits by the door.
If it helps, lay everything out in the order it goes back on, warm layers first and shoes last, so getting dressed afterwards is quick and calm. A few things that make winter evenings smoother:
- A changing robe or a hooded towel, especially for little ones. It keeps them covered and warm while they get sorted.
- Warm layers and a beanie, ready for the walk back to the car.
- Ugg boots or slippers for afterwards. They are warm, quick to slip on, and much easier than laces on small, tired feet.
- A warm drink or a small snack for afterwards.
With the bag ready and the clothes in order, the exit takes a few minutes rather than turning into a scramble.
Keeping kids warm after swimming
The short walk between the pool and the car is where the cold really bites.
A quick dry-off before heading out, rather than dashing into the cold still damp, makes that walk a lot more comfortable. Warm layers on, beanie last, and you are most of the way there. Wet hair is the thing parents ask us about most. What tends to work is towelling it as dry as you can, popping the hood or beanie straight over the top, and finishing it off once you are home and warm. Kept calm and matter of fact, it tends not to turn into a battle.
Keep the mood light
Children take their cue from us. If the trip to lessons feels like a chore to you, it will start to feel like one to them too, and that is usually when the resistance creeps in.
A small ritual helps more than you would expect. A warm drink in the car on the way home, a favourite song, or a few minutes chatting about what they did in the water can turn the evening from something to get through into something they quietly look forward to. It does not need to be elaborate. One small thing they can count on is plenty.
Why it is worth keeping going
Winter is the season families are most tempted to pause, and it is also the season where a steady routine quietly pays off. Keeping lessons going through the colder months protects the momentum your child has already built, so they are not starting from scratch when the weather warms up. Our lessons run year round across all our centres, which is exactly why a consistent winter routine is worth holding onto.
Winter lessons are never going to be the easiest outing of the week. But with the bag packed the night before, a warm exit sorted, and a small ritual to look forward to, the whole evening gets a lot more manageable.
If the routine is feeling hard at the moment, talk to the team at your nearest Hilton Brown Swimming centre. We have helped a lot of families through winter and we are always happy to help with the practical side of things. You can also keep an eye on how your child is getting on through the Customer Portal.
